Saturday Mornings

January 5 to May 3, 2008
The Young Dancers Program is designed to introduce young students to the basics of the dancers technical vocabulary with which they will be encouraged, both singly and through group interaction, to explore the dance experience in a fun environment. At the end of the course, there will be a presentation for family and friends.
The Young Dancers' Program is a creative-based, non-competitive program. Children are registered based on their age. Changes in class levels may be made, pending availability and teacher recommendation, in the first few weeks of each semester so that each child is in a class suitable to his/her development.
CURRICULUM & SCHEDULE
Semester One: September 15 - December 8, 2007
Semester Two: January 5 - May 3, 2008
All classes will be on Saturday mornings; no classes on March 22.
AGES 3+ Early Steps - 9:45 - 10:30 or 10:45 - 11:30
This class is designed for children who are 3 years old, and also for children who are 4 years old but who may be new to dance or the classroom setting.
Early Steps classes include:
- introduction to the classroom setting separate from parents
- learning movement skills through stories, songs, and actions
- rhythmic exploration and dancing together to live accompaniment
AGES 4 - 5 Creative Movement I - 9:45 - 10:30 or 11:45 - 12:30
AGES 5 - 7 Creative Movement II - 10:45 - 11:30
Creative Movement classes include:
- body awareness
- basic movement skills
- spatial awareness
- group interaction
- movement games and patterns
- musicality
- locomotion through space
AGES 7 - 9 Introduction to Young Dancers - 11:00 - 11:45
AGES 9 - 11 Young Dancers I - 9:45 - 10:45
Young Dancers classes include:
- fundamentals of dance technique
- exploring dynamics through the use of time, energy, weight, and space
- musicality
- creative improvisation
- learning and creating dances
AGES 12 - 16 Young Dancers Teens - 11:45 - 1:15
Young Dancers Teens classes include:
- further study of technical principles, including the lengthening of the spine and limbs, fall and rebound, use of the floor, balance, jumping, and turning
- warm-up skills
- solo dances
- body mechanics
- musicality
- learning dance repertoire created specifically for the Teens class
